Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning points late in a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role alongside the game's hero.
"Grit and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
